Cloud Computing is the new kid in the block. All IT industry is agog about it. Hardly a day passes in which you do not find a plethora of “cloud news”. In the cloud-based architecture, the foundation is the Infrastructure-as-a-Service or IaaS, upon which the other two models, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) rest.
Amazon AWS is the pioneer and the largest of all the IaaS providers. Other big IT players in this arena are Joyent, GoGrid and Flexiant. Joyent provides, for example, hosting for a number of FaceBook applications, as also the social network LinkedIn, among others. Do not get misled by the idea that Cloud Computing is new a technology. It is only a new approach to deliver IT.
IaaS offers everything a client needs in the form of infrastructure. Hardware resources like CPU, memory, storage, networking and security are packaged together with various operating systems and applications.
The client is free to choose the hardware size and software resources according to his need. This translates into scalability, the biggest advantage in using IaaS cloud. The other equally big advantage for the clients is exposure to cutting-edge technology, whether in hardware or software. So the first stone that you lay is Infrastructure-as-a-Service.
IaaS is the key foundation for moving your IT more align, agile and cheaper. Why ?
Let’s come back on Amazon example. When they develop the book selling part, they saw that they were just using 10% of their capacity 11 months a year !
Moving in the IaaS field help them to develop : a new business and improve their capacity to deliver their core business also !
Come back on a case for a IT (big company for example). With IaaS capabilities you will be able to
– standardize, it means less complexity, means more efficiency,
– self provisioning for IT teams,
– seamless integration,
– faster delivery,
Just as few examples.
All of the above can only be realized by involving members of your organization as well as your supporting partners (see my previous post on this topic).
Share the knowledge about benefits of cloud computing for their organizations as well as those of the clients.
Delivering IT through cloud is a tremendous challenge. Leverage IaaS to improve your IT !
As I come to the end of this post, I ask my readers:
Are you using IT Infrastructures (IaaS) to leverage your IT strategy ?
